The Maritimes The provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island comprise the Maritimes. Though economically depressed since the collapse of the eastern fishery and closure of coal mines, the region presents a rich, varied history and a modern diverse culture.  More tapestry than mosaic, history is embroidered onto the warp of small fishing ports, farmlands, forests, natural parks, and urban centres and the weft of English, French, and Gaelic cultures.
