Back to the desert: It was time to begin our eastern trek. We drove south, ducking in and out of the Peninsular Mountain foothills before heading east and back into the desert. The progression from forest, to open forest and grassland, to desert interspersed with dryland  agriculture, open pasture and range, and irrigated desert was absorbing. The Anza Borrego desert along State Hwy 78 was a giant off-road playground for dune buggies, ATVs, and motorcycles, interrupted only by irrigated farmland and settlements but it still retained the desert mystique.
Heading south skirting the foothills of California's Peninsular Range Despite being in lee of the mountains, dryland agriculture was still possible. Pastureland in the open forest and grasslands near Julian Banner Grade, leaving the open forests and grasslands of the foothills behind for the desert The Ocotillo off-road vehicle recreation area extends for miles.
