Redwood Hwy to the Central Valley: An honor guard of giant Redwoods flanked the highway as we climbed over the divide and followed the valleys of the Northern Coastal Range south before heading east to the Central Valley.
The old growth Redwoods of Richardson SP lined Hwy 101 as we climbed to the divide. Over the divide, we followed Tenmile Creek south through scrub Oak and parkland towards Laytonville. The town of Willits, named for Hiram Willits who settled in 1857, saw a shoot out beteen feuding families (5 dead, 3 injured, and the lynching of 2 young ne're do wells by members of the Masonic Lodge. Pasture and scattered oaks cover the dry vallys of the eastern coast mountains. Vineyards cover the Ukiah valley bottom south of Talmage on the Old River Road. The shaded Westside Road winds through vineyards along the Russian River south of Healdsburg. From the Russian River, we headed east to Calistoga in the famed Napa Valley. Highway 12 approaching the Napa River before finally cutting east to the Central Valley. After a long day, the Central Valley and a windfarm near Rio Vista Junction. Contents
