Puget Sound: Even under a dull, overcast sky that drained color and flattened the landscape, Puget Sound displayed a late winter beauty.
Beginning a 4 month exploration of the US, we crossed into Washington State at the Blaine-Peace Arch port of entry south of Vancouver, BC. The drive south along the Chuckanut Drive from Bellingham snakes along the steep bluffs of Puget Sound. Second growth forest cloaks the bluffs and hillsides and allows only peek-a-boo views of the water. The Chuckanut Drive left the rock bluffs of the sound and spilled us onto the agricultural lands and communities of the Skagit Valley near Edison. The horsey set and dairy farms occupy the uplands on Farm Market Road south of Edison. Pass Island and the Deception Pass bridges link Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands. The bridges provide spectacular views. However, drive down to the State Park for even more spectacular views of Pass Island and the bridges. Vietnam era Grumman A-6 Intruders guard Whidbey Island Naval Airbase on the route to Coupville and the Port Townsend Ferry. The MV Kennewick carries cars and passengers from Coupville on Whidbey Island to Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula.
