North California Coast: The rain was back, so we were not disappointed to leave Oregon. However, it made for a dreary welcome to California. Winding alternately between coast and inland forest we made our way to a dark, deserted, wet, cold and dismal camp at Richardson Grove State Park.
We left our camp at Harris Beach State Park in a cold wet rain. Rain sodden fields of the Smith River floodplain welcomed us to California. Headlights glistened on the rain soaked streets of Crescent City. The vaunted view of the Ocean View Inn at Crescent City was shrouded by mist. Still wet and cold, the beach at False Klamath Cove along the Redwood Highway was at least clear. Hand crafted gifts of Redwood and Myrtle can be found on the Redwood Highway (Hwy 101) around Orick. Finally, the Eucalyptus trees along Arcata Bay near Eureka began to look like California. Oak studded hillsides climbing to Richardson Grove SP convinced us that we had left the northwest behind. In summer the towering Redwoods make the Richardson Grove SP  a pleasant stay; in winter, when deserted, wet, and cold, not so much. Contents
